Andrew's Enve Mog

A crit-racer’s gravel bike.

Details:

This bike, just like Andrew’s race bike was supplied by the Clif Family Crit Team. It’s an Enve MOG frameset, with a RX825 GRX groupset, with a Dura-Ace crankset (we’ll talk about that later).

Wheels are Enve G23’s, Enve’s do it all gravel rim focused on compliance for rough gravel roads, paired to Enve’s new Innerdrive hubs.

Since this bike is going to see a lot of dust, dirt, grime, and water, both the headset and the bottom bracket were swapped for some more durable offerings. Enduro stainless steel headset bearings, and an Enduro Maxhit, T47 bottom bracket. The Maxhit bottom brackets are interesting, as instead of being a traditional cartridge bearing pressed into a bottom bracket shell, the maxhit’s bottom bracket shell acts as the bearing’s outer race. This extra space means larger balls can fit into the cartridge for better durability and load capacity.

Paired with this bottom bracket is a Dura-Ace crankset. Enve will tell you this is not a compatible fit with this frame, and they’re correct. The narrow chainline of road cranks in comparison with Shimano GRX cranks mean that if you don’t want your chainrings to rub the frame, it has to be offset to the driveside a not-so-insignificant amount. If these were not team supplied parts, this is not something I would usually be willing to do. Why are Andrew and other gravel racers willing to pedal with an asymmetric crank position? Gearing. GRX cranks only go up to a 48 tooth large chainring, not quite big enough to keep up with the fastest in today’s gravel races. Running road cranks allow for larger chainrings, at the cost of an imperfect crank spacing, and suboptimal shifting.

Andrew’s MOG cockpit is similarly aggressive to his Melee’s, 120mm slammed Enve In-Route stem, paired to 35cm at the hood Enve Aero bars, and sprint shifters in the drops. This setup would not be suggested for most, but for someone with bike handling skills like Andrew, the loss in control is well worth the aerodynamic benefits.
